Fulbright Scholar Teaches Sandscribe Students

Lucy Gebre-Egziabher, a filmmaker and educator, was selected for a Fulbright Specialist Program to teach at Rift Valley University in Addis Ababa, where she also undertook the mission of training Sandscribe students. Rift Valley is one of Sandscribe’s local partners, and our training base is located on their Bole campus. Spotlight: Student Michael Shimeles

Our current student, Michael Shimeles, has directed two short films, including Ye Gomma Werat – one of four films our Sandscribe students produced this past fall under the leadership of Fulbright scholar, Lucy Gebre-Egziabher. Ye Gomma Werat won great acclaim in December when it was screened before an audience of Addis’ filmmakers and film students. Founder’s Story

I was born and raised in Ethiopia. I was the only person from my small village to go to college. I achieved success quite young — my books were published and my plays were produced in Addis Ababa’s best theaters.
