This past fall (2015), Sandscribe students Bayisa Tura and Sagni Dibisa wrote and directed the short film Qanafaa as part of the intensive class, “From Script to Screen,” taught by visiting Fulbright scholar Fulbright  Lucy Gebre-Egziabher. Qanafaa has received much praise from audiences in Ethiopia. In Qanafaa, a woman is beaten by her husband. Spotlight: Alumnus Kelbessa Megersa

Sandscribe has sent many of its graduates out into the film industry in Ethiopia, and we are adding more each graduation. Sandscribe alumnus, Kelbessa Megersa, says that the intensive training at Sandscribe equipped him wih the necessary tools for filmmaking and encouraged him to move forward as a screenwriter and director. Post Sandscribe, he wrote and directed Dheebuu (Thirst), an 80-episode drama series. Watch the trailer in our video gallery. Spotlight: Student Michael Shimeles

Our current student, Michael Shimeles, has directed two short films, including Ye Gomma Werat – one of four films our Sandscribe students produced this past fall under the leadership of Fulbright scholar, Lucy Gebre-Egziabher. Ye Gomma Werat won great acclaim in December when it was screened before an audience of Addis’ filmmakers and film students.
