In October 2015, some of our faculty and advisory board met over dinner in Staten Island to discuss news and developments at Sandscribe. Dr. Steven Thomas and his wife, Maya Tessema were on hand; Dhaba Wayessa and Haimanot Gobena drove up from Alexandria. Isaacs was in from Los Angeles.
Thomas teaches at Wagner College, where for the past three years he has been teaching transnational classrooms that connect his students on Staten Island with Sandscribe’s students in Addis Ababa. It was not Dhaba’s first time to visit Staten Island. In 2013, he met with the administrators of Wagner College, who were so inspired by Dhaba’s vision that they organized an educational trip that brought former film executive Stephen Greenwald and documentary filmmaker Jennifer Dworkin to Addis to run short workshops.
Susan was in New York City to present her solo show, Angry Conversations With God, at the United Solo Theater Festival, where it won the Best Adaptation award. She brought her show to Staten Island and meet up with her Sandscribe compatriots.
We caught up with each other and brainstormed about what’s next for Sandscribe. We have some very exciting news to deliver soon, so check back with us shortly.
